| Model: | 2001 Tail Dragger #078 |
| Description: | This stripper works wonderfully, and can be done on what is likely the most widely-available and unpopular Tail Dragger that Mattel ever produced. This takes the tasteful Tampo work on the 2000 regular-issue blue Tail Dragger a step further and leaves you with a red-tint-window, blue-metallic Dragger that makes a very nice showpiece, and one that you'll not feel the least guilt over, since this series' Tampo printing frankly looks awful. I love the Tail Dragger so much as a paperweight or luck charm (it's a heavy sucker and has curves that feel very nice in the hand), and this one in particular for its color combination, that I stripped a couple more of these monstrosities when I found them, just to insure that I'd never be without my favorite worry stone. The shot below is particularly evocative...it bears an uncanny resemblance to a sitting cat ready to pounce, and truly shows off the talent of the individual who originally designed this rod. No wonder it's a collector favorite and so often chosen for promotional use over other HW dies. |
| Level of difficulty: | Easy. Yet another difficult-to-screw-up starter project...no sensitive plastics near Tampo paint, and no deep, difficult-to-clean grooves. |
| Options: | The only thing worth leaving on this is the HW logo on the right rear fender, but as the example below shows, it is one of few models that looks better without a "company tattoo". |
| Watch for: | ...me scooping cheap copies of this at HW meets for stripping and swapping. |
