| Model: | 2000 1936 Cord #097 |
| Description: | This is one of the most beautiful cars ever built in America, and to my knowledge, the last Hot Wheels regular issue to feature the old style blackwall mags. And you could drive the real thing off the lot in '36 for well under $1,000...but then, this was the heart of the Depression. This bottom-of-the-line Cord from the company that gave us the Auburn and Duesenberg was a failed American Volkswagen, a well-built, well-designed car at a reasonable price, and the design is simply stunning. As the brand progressed, it became a much more interesting and meaty car; 1938s offered optional supercharging (as seen on the 1970 Hot Wheels Classic Cord) and prices on some models began to approach those of the Auburns. Mattel to their credit have never done a disservice to this design with tasteless Tampo work. |
| Tech notes : | This car that offers an opportunity for a quick-and-dirty mod that you might find appealing. The '99 on the right features a bumperless look; this was one incredibly long model. The bumpers can literally be snapped off with finger pressure. But when the front bumper comes off, the front axle drops to the floor with no support left for it. As shown below, a very liberal application of plastic glue (I prefer Weldbond, but Elmer's Glue-All will also do; wood glues and school white glues are likely to be less effective) reattaches the axle, and the above model has survived intact, even after being thrown at a TV set after a particularly bad stock report, for nearly two and a half years. |
| Level of difficulty: | Easy; requires patience and correct glue. |
| Options: | Wheel replacement? Not really...this would require breaking the rear chassis to replace those wheels too (remember...this is quick-and-dirty modding; no power tools allowed!) No point in snapping off only one bumper either...the look just isn't quite right. |
| Watch for: | See above. |
