Intermediate. The base
Matchbox has a plastic base, so it was fairly easy to work with. The wire-look
wheels are fairly easy to source from Johnny Lightning's at the narrow width
needed for this casting. |

Matchbox' E-type 2+2
of the early 1960s was one of my all-time favorite toy cars. (I know how
people feel about the 2+2...just bite me.) I was thrilled to see this
retool...just take a peek into the cockpit to see how nicely they detailed
this mainline release. I didn't snag any more of this model, though, which
was a shame, because there's been a number of releases since which offer
interesting options for mixing/matching of chassis'. Imagine this on a
baby-blue bottom, for example...or the deep-blue GT-liveried release on
this red body. It's a fortunate thing that the axle width on this casting
happens to be the same width as a large percentage of Johnny Lightning
European sports cars. So matching up these chrome "spoker" hubs
to this casting was a natural choice. And hey what...I get to keep those
sweet original 3-spoke knock-off hubs this came with for use on another
car!

Gorgeous casting, nice
detailing, lovely color, sweet period-accurate wheels...what more could
you ask? How about a metal bottom!? Seriously, I think this is very
nearly a four-star collectible. |
