The Ultimate Shopper in Paperback
A very limited supply of the original trade paperback is still available.

The Ultimate Shopper, published in 1987 under my own "Living Skill Books" imprint, was my first, and to this date only, mass-market trade paperback. It began in 1985 as a privately-published, by-mail-only set of booklets originally entitled SuperThrift, and was wholly revised and rewritten in 1993 under the original SuperThrift title..

What began in late 1985 as a hastily-assembled handbook of elementary consumer technique and handy-hints collection has evolved to become what I'm sure you'll agree is the most unusual moneysaving guide you're ever likely to see...and very likely the most entertaining, too.

Since its 1987 trade paperback edition, readers have remarked more often on how often they doubled over in laughter or had to set the book on the night table rather than awaken a partner with their chuckles and guffaw than on how valuable the material ever was for the purpose it was created.

Don't take my word for it...read it for yourself. I promise you this much: if you find it funny, you'll also find it effective, because however common-sensical you may find most of the material, I'll guarantee you that you're not using half of it, and if a good laugh gets you comfy with a few new moneysaving ideas, then the book has more than fulfilled its purpose...and I would appreciate a tangible expression of thanks for that.

This book is made available here in two forms. The menu at right offers the book itself for download as plaintext files or as a Palm-compatible e-book, or as HTML for online browsing. I've also made available the story behind the book as part of my Entrepreneurial Misadventures of a Schmuck section.

I've also made available the complete 1993 release of The Ultimate Shopper Press Kit for any self-publishing authors who may be interested, or for those curious about just what's involved in publicizing a self-published title. For an awful-selling book, it - and I - got one hell of a lot of media attention, and this kit shows precisely how that was achieved. While some of the techniques and approaches are admittedly dated, there's still a lot in the kit that's as usable today as it was in 1987 when I got coverage in more than 125 media markets in 120 days.

Now, if you'll pardon me, I'd like to take this rudimentary step to warrant the mature rating on this page and the contents of this subsection, and simultaneously express the sentiment that most readily come to mind when reminiscing about the performance of this title in the retail marketplace:

FUCK!

Thank you for your patience. Please proceed now with your menu selection.
