The Sonora model got its name in a rather arbitrary way. The name was chosen precisely because it has nothing to do with addiction, so it's an easily-discarded name if a more permanent name for the model emerges in the future. Assigning an arbitrary name to the model at this time also helps to insure that the theory or model can't be named for, or credited to, any specific individual or group. It's an important consideration given the number of groups and individuals which have contributed to it.

"Sonora" was a sudden inspiration that simply seemed to fit, and was chosen for several reasons.

The Sonora Desert is a vast geographical expanse stretching from well into Mexico to the southern edge of Canada. Many of the pioneering researchers in pre/perinatal psychology, a major contributor to this model, live or practice in areas close to the Sonora Desert. In fact, I discovered the final pieces of the puzzle on a practitioner's website while temporarily living at the northern tip of the Sonora Desert.

"Sonora" has always had a certain lyrical ring to my ears, and in an odd way, it conjures the image of sound. And this is, I believe, the soundest model of its kind in existence at this time!.
